It’s on! Time to submit your application to the 2012 season of the Ballston Arts & Crafts Market!

The deadline for the first round of jurying is Monday, March 5, 2012. After March 5th, submissions will still be reviewed, but are subject to space availability.

Please find the submission form and guidelines for the 2012 season on the right side of the blog under " 2012 Submission Form." Please send all submission packets to me at my NEW EMAIL, Jessica@BallstonBID.com.

For easy emailing, please follow these simple instructions:
1). Save (Save As) submission form to your computer as a pdf.
2). Open using Adobe Reader. If you need to, GET ADOBE READER.
3). Fill in form, then save again.

Hey everyone! I am proud to announce that the Ballston Arts & Crafts Market will be back in 2012 with a new look, but the same high-quality art that our quirky market is known for. Keep an eye out for the Call to Artists this month--hopefully really soon.

We're working as hard as we can to get the 2012 submission form into your crafty little hands, so please be patient as we work out a couple of things.

In the meantime, here's sneak peak at our new little friend ... a Ballston Yeti! What shall we call him?

Well, that's all folks. The final market of 2011 has come and gone. How bittersweet. And we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. Thank you to everyone who has helped create such an amazing handmade scene in Arlington-the artists, the visitors our supporters and The Ballston BID. Here's to an even brighter and bigger 2012.

If it Ain't BOXBOY, It Ain't Demented! Just in time for Halloween, BoxBoy Demented Decoupage returns to the Ballston A&C Market for the season's final show on October 8th!

Being involved the craft world for a couple years now, I notice their are definitely DC craft-stars out there ... meaning there are certain crafters that are always on the scene. Certain folks that you are happy to catch at all the cool, local craft fairs, and automatically know their work as soon as you see it. And BoxBoy is one of those artists!

"BoxBoy makes very few sweet, pretty boxes ... flowers and Victoriana and cute little animals just don't cut it, thank you. If it ain't BoxBoy, it ain't demented!" And that's what I absolutely love about Paul and his demented creations.

Artist, Katharine Watson returns to the Ballston A&C Market on Octoner 8th - the last show of the season!

All of her intricately created items are hand block-printed with original designs carved from linoleum blocks. Katharine finds her inspiration in textiles, stone carvings, Indian architecture and patterns all around her.

Unique photography is an absolute joy to come across. That's why Steven L. Miller Words & Images is such a well-known photographer.

As Steven expresses in his website: Consider the power of a black-and-white image. Without color, black-and-white images must succeed because of content. Moments, frozen in time, that can change hearts and minds as well as travel photography and nature. At Steven L. Miller Words and Images, Steve is commited to making distinctive photographs that reflect the human condition.

Hm. Maybe that's why nine of Miller's images are in the permanent collection of The Smithsonian Museum.

Amy Manson Pottery Returns October 8th!

For me, awesome pottery is hard to find. I like a little mix of old-school colors and new-school design, so when I saw Amy Manson Pottery I was beyond impressed. She's got it.

Amy Manson has been creating with clay for the past nine years. She uses high-fired stoneware and porcelain, and enjoys glaze colors and themes, which can be found in nature.

Her passion for clay certainly shows in her work! Enjoy Amy Manson's pottery in person at the next Ballston A&C Market on Saturday, October 9th--the last market of the season.

Q&A with Jenny Wren Jewelry

1). I love how your jewelry is unique and well made, yet priced very reasonably! How did you get into jewelry-making and the craft biz?
I have always been imaginative and love collecting jewelry. Many years ago, a close friend gave me a pair of earrings for my birthday that I really liked. I asked her where she got them and she said, "I made them!" I was intrigued and asked her to show me how. I have been making jewelry ever since.

2). So, tell us about your business name, Jenny Wren. Is it a nod to Paul McCartney? ;)
I have been asked that many times! Though I'm a big Beatles/Paul McCartney fan, I had not heard of that song. My name is Jenny and when I was young, my mom read me a story about a bird named Jenny Wren. She began calling me Jenny Wren, or Wren for short, from the time I was very young. I have a real fondness for that nickname so when I was thinking of the name for my business it came to mind early on. Also, since I'm a graphic designer, I knew I could do something interesting with a bird graphic, so I went for it.

3). What three words would you use to describe your craft?
Wow... that's a good question. Today, I would have to say: eclectic, fun and inviting. On another day, I would most likely come up with different adjectives.

4). Your felt bracelets are just SO cool! What would you say is your most popular type of jewelry design?
So glad you like the bracelets! They were my first foray into sewing and using felt in my jewelry and I really enjoy making those. My most popular jewelry design of late are my vintage button rings. I love making them: hunting for the perfect vintage buttons, working out the color, texture and size combinations, etc. I'm getting a lot of positive response to the rings. I love that they cover a wide generational demographic as the buttons are nostalgic for women my age and older and they also appeal, from a vintage perspective, for younger jewelry lovers.

5). Where can we find your craft outside the Ballston Arts & Crafts Market?
I have a site on etsy, where there is a small selection of items for sale. But, you can see a much larger offering of my jewelry when I participate in local craft markets like Fenton Street Market, Handmade Mart and the Crafty Bastards Arts and Crafts Fair (held on October 1st this year).

Random bonus question: What’s in your pockets right now? Go!
Today just a little pocket lint! On other days there would be a lucky penny I found on my walk to work or a broken piece of jewelry that I found on the sidewalk that I will make into some new creation!

Melanie creates her wearable artwork using unique pieces of high-quality semiprecious stones, freshwater pearls, and sterling silver in unusual sizes, shapes and combinations. And she has recently expanded her collection with two new materials -- Italian-made woven metal (a completely new application she originated!) and "Mesh Nests,"very fun, very cool!

1). I LOVE your artwork. I’ve had an etsy crush on you for a long time! LOL! Where do you find your inspiration?
I find my inspiration in many places, but I mostly look to fantasy movies and different Asian cultures for my inspiration. I am also very inspired by nature too.

2). Your Birds & Butterflies necklace is absolutely stunning. And those Dust Bunnies figures are so cool! Do you have a favorite piece or design that you created?
Thanks for the love! Yes, I definitely have a favorite. My Last Call design is my absolute fave because there is nothing more fun than a drunk mermaid in a martini glass. I have painted this design and created a vector design of it.

3). What three words would you use to describe your craft?
Art, Design and Illustration!

4). Please tell us a little bit about your background. Have you always been an artist? Is this a full-time gig for you?
My background is in Toy Design. I have worked in the toy industry for 11 years. Designing toys is my full-time gig. Tsai-fi is my creative outlet to express my personal passion for design.

5). Where can we find your craft outside the Ballston Arts & Crafts Market?

There's one word that I think of when I see Artologica's bacteria-based artwork: neat-o-rama. Yah, that's right. I said it ... I'm bringing it back!

Artologica creates original paintings that explore the intriguing beauty of natural phenomena. Artist, Michele Banks, uses an old, traditional medium, watercolor, to create pieces that are anything but old-fashioned. All of her pieces are one-of-a-kind, hand-painted originals. So far, Michele hasn't made prints of her work. She just prefers to paint another one!

Q&A with FuzzyMug

1). I am a HUGE animal-lover, too! Maybe that’s part of the reason I am so drawn to your work. Tell us a little bit about how you started FuzzyMug and why.
I don't know. I've just always been an "animal person." We grew up with lots of pets and I have always felt a special bond to them. When I graduated from college, I started volunteering for The Maryland SPCA in Baltimore and now have three rescue dogs and three cats of my own. FuzzyMug really started when I made a set of note cards for my friend for Christmas 2009. I had taken a really great photo of her dog and wanted to do something special with it and sort of figured out the portrait process I use right there. Once other people saw the note cards, and it just sort of took off and orders started coming in. Most of my friends have pets, too, so it wasn't hard to find my audience.

2). What has been your biggest crafting achievement, so far?
I really love being able to give back and help shelters across the U.S. I send out a lot of Custom Portrait gift certificates for silent auctions and raffles to raise money for animals in need. It's pretty rewarding to be able to help so many different organizations who are doing their best to help animals in need. I am also pretty proud of the DIY screen printing set up I have going in my garage. I took screen printing in college but had to turn to YouTube for a refresher when I decided to take it up again last spring. It's amazing what you can learn by searching YouTube!

3). What three words would you use to describe your craft?
Fuzzy. Good. Design.

4). Who are your favorite crafters?
I'm a member of Baltimore Etsy Street Team (BEST) and have to say that it is really a talented bunch. I am a sucker for beautiful design and the great attention to detail that's exhibited in Jill Popowich's jewelry designs. I also love the soft colors, geometric patterns and gorgeous craftsmanship in NAMOO's work. I can't make jewelry or sew, so I am fascinated by what they are able to create since I really have no idea how they do it!

5). Where can we find your craft outside the Ballston Arts & Crafts Market?
We love Fenton Street Market in Silver Spring and are there quite a few times a year and always have FuzzyMug stuff available on Etsy and at Marlow, McCrystle & Jones Florist in Lutherville, MD.

Random Bonus Question: Who would win in a fight--a yeti or a ninja panda?
Going to have to go with Yeti. Seems like he could move a little faster.

Alternate Histories - August 13th!

Artist, Matthew Buchholz, takes classic images and puts a sci-fi spin on them. It's like he is remaking history … with monsters and robots!

Realistic and humorous, Alternate Histories uses entirely digital sources to refashions archival images to include monsters and science-fiction elements, drawing the viewer’s eye to search for the anachronism. Matthew has long been fascinated with the quality of vintage illustrations and photographs, as well as the wealth of inspiration from low-budget science fiction films. He uses a variety of archives and computer programs to complete the work.

Scrap DC - August 13

Hot Days of Summer

Hi there everyone. I have decided to get my Mom on a little early and write a little something about the hot weather this weekend.

For all of you who have shows this Saturday, did you know it's going to be hitting 100 degrees in the DC Metro area? Yikes. 100 degrees! Okay, okay. Some places only 98 degrees, but still ... that's really hot!

So, please remember to bring the appropriate necessities on these hots days. Keep in mind, not all shows offer free water, so bring plenty of bottled liquids AND ice with you.

Oh! And, have you seen these portable, battery operated fans? Inexpensive and pretty cool, they may be helpful in a heat wave, too!

Just play it safe folks and the heat will be more manageable.

Not much to say really ... except that Saturday's market was AWESOME! The weather was bright and sunny, the visitors were aplenty, the band was so much fun and the art was fantastic (of course!).

Thanks go out to you all who braved the annoying construction. That was a weird surprise, but whatevs. It really didn't effect things much.

Since she was a little girl Jill Popowich, the talent behind Jill Popowich Designs in Metal, loved jewelry. She was intrigued with designing and creating. As an adult, Jill works as an Environmental Graphic Designer and has had the opportunity to travel the world working on large-scale retail environments designing signage, sculptures and architectural details.

It is this large scale 3-D work that re-sparked her interest in jewelry design and the opportunity to build something that can be interacted with on a personal scale.

Q&A with Red & Main

1). What can I say? Your clay creations are just so friggin’ awesome. I really want to start a collection! So, where does the name, “Red & Main” come from?
It's a fairly convoluted story. I was thinking of names for my store and my top option was Ceramasaurus Rex. A friend also suggested Kiln Me Softly, which earned big points for punny-ness. I thought about both of those names and then imagined myself doing an interview (like this one). While both names were super fun, it was also impossible to take me seriously when I thought about them like that. So, I started brainstorming again. My husband's last name begins with "R" and mine begins with "M". I started thinking of things about myself that made me unique that began with "R" or "M". My bright, Special FX brand hair was obviously the first thing that came to mind. So, there was "Red" and the "Main" just came naturally.

2). Yetis, Bigfoot, Green Globs of Candy-Loving Happiness and two-toed sloths. What other mythological and/or peculiar creatures are on the agenda? Perhaps a griffin? ;)
I'm working on two new projects right now. The first is a series I call "Emoti-Monsters," which are little blob monsters expressing one type of emotion or action. Thus far, I've completed sculpting Joy, Contentment, and Deviousness, but I have lots of others planned. The second is a project that involves things that scare me, or used to scare me as a child. I take those scary things and create new, cuter versions of them. There was a cartoon Jackalope (One Eyed Jack from Tiny Toon Adventures if anyone is wondering how a Jackalope could possibly be scary ... look him up) that scared the piss out of me when I was little. The new, adorable Jackalope is in my kiln right now for his glaze firing. It's nice to be able to associate new things with thoughts that aren't positive. And ... there might be a griffin in my kiln. Maybe. Who knows.

3). Can you tell us a little bit about your creative process? For example, do you sketch your critters before sculpting them, or do you just dive right in?
I love making lists, so I usually have a working list of the items I'm looking to create. I'll pick one item from the list, grab a lump of clay, roll it into a ball and start in. Usually, I can tell right away where features should go and how the little guy will take shape. I'm not much of a illustrator (but I desperately wish that I was) so drawing in advance would be a little silly. Maybe that could be a new featured series for me: Things Made From Clay and Poorly Drawn on Paper.

4). What three words would you use to describe your craft?

I think I'd pick challenging, supremely enjoyable and consuming.

5). Where can we find your craft outside the Ballston Arts & Crafts Market?
I can be found on Etsy. I'm also on my blog. My pieces can be viewed via Etsy Mini there, too.

Random Bonus Question: Who would win in a fight--a yeti or a ninja panda?
I babysat a friend's son last year and we watched Kung Fu Panda multiple times for six hours straight. Needless to say, this experience taught me that Ninja Pandas are not to be taken lightly. So, I'm going with Ninja Panda for the win in the Yeti/Panda match up. Plus, Yetis are slow ... and want hugs. I doubt their tubby little arms would be suited for 12 rounds of panda throw down.

Q&A with NAMOO

1). You design monkeys, farm animals, whales and so much more! I LOVE them all! Your playful illustrations and quilted creations are so sweet, fun and colorful. Is NAMOO your full-time job?

Thank you! My print inspiration comes mostly from my preschooler. We play, doodle and craft a lot together at home and some of them get printed on baby bodysuits and totes that I make. For the amount work that I put into my business —considering I work all night during the busy craft season— I could say that NAMOO is my full-time job, but currently it is a part-time job. My daughter attends preschool part-time and I work on my business when she is away from home for preschool or at night after she goes to bed and when my husband takes time off work. One day it will be a full-time.

2). I read on your etsy site that NAMOO is a sister team—you (insung) live in Maryland and your sister lives in Seoul, Korea. Wow! That must be challenging. Would you mind telling us how your creative process works since you guys are far away from each other?

We exchange our opinions on business direction of NAMOO, design inspirations, craft show exhibit ideas, etc., through e-mails, phone and Skype. She finds craft materials from the fabric district (it is an amazing place where you can find high-quality fabric and craft items from Korea and Japan) and introduces them to me from time to time. As she works as a graphic designer in the city, she handles most of our marketing materials including logos, tags, business cards and banners. We hope to run NAMOO together once again in the US. My husband helps a quite bit with marketing and description verbiage, as well, whenever I ask him. It is a family adventure.

3). What do you like best about exhibiting at craft shows?
Getting the booth set-up in the morning before the show is cumbersome but I love the process of creating a space with items that I made. Every show I try a bit of a different approach but try to maintain the same look and feel while making the 10' x10' or less space more inviting. I recently had a customer who came to my booth standing right in the middle and said, “I wish I could stay in your booth all day. It is a little heaven for me!” I enjoy meeting people who appreciates craftsmanship, fresh modern fabrics and craft ideas from overseas, i.e. Japan, that I often incorporate into my design.

4). What three words would you use to describe your craft?
Circles. Warm. Boundless,

5). Where can we find your craft outside the Ballston Arts & Crafts Market?
I sell on Etsy. You can find my items in ArtSpring in Silver Spring, Maryland. I attend craft shows in Maryland, DC and Virginia. From time to time, I venture out to further cities. My show schedule gets updated in my blog. Please feel free to check it out!

Melissa Yates Tomlinson is WeirdGirl Designs. And just for the record, I've met Melissa and have seen her designs, and I don't think she or her creations are "weird." Unique. Cool. Modern --Sure! But weird? Well, okay ... maybe a little. But, that's what makes her fused glass artwork so special!

Melissa has been perfecting the art of fused glass for a little over four years now and she also has been teaching the medium for three.

Amy Manson Pottery - July 9th!

Amy Manson has been creating with clay for the past nine years. She uses high-fired stoneware and porcelain, and enjoys glaze colors and themes, which can be found in nature. Amy tries to incorporate a combination of family, prayer, meditation, nature and the creation of pottery into every single day of her life as part of her own personal growth and transformation.

"It gives me great insight and joy to create a one of a kind piece of artwork. I hope others enjoy viewing and utilizing the pottery as much as I enjoyed making it!"

The Ballston Patch Covers Saturday's Market

The Ballston Patch wrote such a fanatastic article about Saturday's show, I just have to share it with you here!

Nothing screams summer like an outdoor market under the sun. Art vendors showcased their work on Saturday at the Ballston Arts and Crafts Market in Welburn Square.

A large crowd of Arlingtonians came out to shop and soak up the sun while the acoustic mandolin-toting blues band Snakehead Run provided the upbeat tunes. The market meets every second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

Under the tents was an impressive array of handmade pieces ranging from professional photographs to silk-screen printed pillows. Plus, the vendors are just as lovely as their crafts.

Bette of Bette's Bags greets customers with a friendly smile. Her stand also draws attention with its collection of colorful bags with great summer patterns.

"My daughter purchased an expensive designer bag and got tired of seeing other people wearing it. That's when I got the idea of making one-of-a-kind bags!" said Bette.
